This funny little BMW was seen trundling around Munich and at first, it seems like an ordinary M235i. But it isn't.

Kinja'd!!!

On closer inspection, you notice the shorter wheelbase along with the lowered roofline.

Kinja'd!!!

There's also the carbon fibre hood, carbon fibre boot spoiler and carbon fibre "double bubble" roof.

Comparison photo with an ordinary M235i for reference. What do you think it could be? A test mule for BMW's upcoming collaboration with Toyota perhaps?

I'm gonna guess next Z4 … or whatever they're going to call the next small sports car. Shortened wheelbase, lower roof, what else could it be?

Isn't that exactly what they're collaborating with Toyota for?

It looks so ridiculous. But it's not the fact of the roofline being too low, but the body being to tall and bulbous.

Toyota left driving dynamics to Subaru for the Burzfurz. Based off that and that BMW knows handling better than Toyota, I'm betting the same is happening here.

I'm gonna speculate that it has something to do with new engine testing - The 328 and 335 are getting new engines that will bump them to 330 and 340. Probably the same for the 2 series.

I'm not going to cry foul here, but a few things are odd. I live close to Munich and work in Munich so I see a lot of BMW test mules/pre-production cars. They usually are to some degree covered with that flowery vinyl that manufacturers love these days. AND ALL OF THEM HAVE FRONT LICENSE PLATES. Driving around like this is a severely punishable act, and a reputable company like BMW would never let a car leave their premises without one.

But why would they make a chop top 2 series just to test some new engines?
